Transforming a dark five-acre rural estate with 108 carefully placed fixtures
Five-Acre Estate Outdoor Lighting Installation in Eighty Four
Project Overview
This project in Eighty Four transformed a completely dark five-acre property into a fully illuminated outdoor living space designed to be enjoyed long after sunset. The homeowners had recently completed their pool and cabana area and wanted outdoor lighting to be the final finishing touch that tied the entire property together.
Because the home sits in a rural area with virtually no existing exterior lighting, the property would become pitch black at night. The goal was to highlight the architecture of the home, showcase the mature trees throughout the landscape, improve visibility along the long driveway, and create a welcoming atmosphere around every part of the property.
We installed 108 fixtures throughout the estate, including architectural uplighting, path lighting, well lights, gutter-mounted lighting, and tree-mounted moon lighting. The system illuminates the home from every angle, extends behind the pool and cabana area, highlights trees throughout the property, and includes seven moon lighting fixtures mounted approximately 30 feet high in a mature tree to create natural-looking overhead illumination within the garden space.
Design Direction
The design centered around creating a layered lighting system that would showcase the scale of the property while maintaining a warm, natural appearance. Because the estate spans approximately five acres, careful planning was required to illuminate the home, pool area, driveway, gardens, and distant landscape features without creating harsh hotspots or excessive brightness.
We used a mix of lighting techniques to bring the property to life after dark:
-
- Architectural uplighting to emphasize the home's exterior features
- Gutter-mounted lighting to illuminate the second and third-story elevations
- Tree uplighting to showcase mature specimen trees throughout the property
- Path lighting to improve visibility and guide movement around outdoor spaces
- Moon lighting installed high in a mature tree to create soft overhead illumination in the garden area
Every fixture location was carefully planned to create depth, balance, and visibility across the property while preserving the peaceful atmosphere of the rural setting.
Installation Challenges
One of the most complex aspects of this project was the moon lighting installation. Seven fixtures were mounted approximately 30 feet high within a mature tree to create a realistic moonlight effect throughout the garden space below. Achieving the right coverage required careful aiming and adjustment from multiple vantage points.
Managing power distribution across a property of this size also required detailed planning. With 108 fixtures spread throughout the estate, wire runs had to be strategically designed to prevent excessive fixture loads on any single run while maintaining consistent performance across the entire system.
The combination of long distances, elevated fixture locations, and multiple lighting zones required a thoughtful installation approach from start to finish.
The Result
The completed lighting system transformed a property that was previously completely dark at night into a beautifully illuminated estate. The home now stands out from every angle, the driveway is framed by softly lit trees, and the pool and cabana area remain inviting long after sunset.
Using premium fixtures from Sterling Lighting LLC for the moon lighting components and Redwoods Landscape Lighting products for the uplighting, path lighting, gutter lighting, and well lighting, the finished system delivers both visual impact and long-term reliability. The result is a property that feels safer, more welcoming, and fully finished, exactly as the homeowners envisioned.
